What is a milk collection centre?
The village point where farmers bring milk twice a day and it is weighed, tested and recorded.
A collection centre runs twice a day, in the hours before dawn and again in the evening. Each farmer's can is weighed, a sample is tested for fat and often SNF, and the entry is written against their account number.
The centre may be run by a cooperative society, by a private dairy, or by an individual who sells on to a larger union. In all three the day has the same shape and the same two peaks.
The pressure is that the queue cannot wait. Anything that adds ten seconds per farmer adds half an hour across two hundred of them, twice a day, every day.
